Remember Sudan; Our Heritage Our Sudan
Celebrations of Sudanese Culture

Today’s very brief post is dedicated to the cultural initiative, Our Heritage, Our Sudan, and seeks to highlight its beautifully filmed collection of videos celebrating numerous aspects of Sudanese creative life. The films are subtitled in English and Arabic and open access on Youtube. The collection includes videos of archive footage, tours of historical sites, films on craft traditions such as pottery and weaving, traditional wedding celebrations, music and dancing, as well as reports on the pressing ecological issues facing Sudan.

This 5-minute, evocative vignette with English subtitles deftly captures the reflections of Sudanese professionals, researchers and human rights activists who find themselves outside their homeland. They speak powerfully about their memories of Sudan, the shock of war, and the challenges of climate change. They also touch on what they see as the virtues and flaws of Sudanese society.
“When I think of Khartoum I always remember the lemon tress, the tea ladies, the people, the scorching sun …”
“The sweet memories that connect us to Nyala are the childhood memories, all our happy school years,…”
